Postdoctoral Fellow
Brendan Moran
Dr. Moran is a Research Scientist at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the Department of Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences and part of the Lithium Solutions team led by Dr. David Boutt and Dr. LeeAnn Munk. He has been working to understand the many complexities of the natural hydrological systems where lithium resources occur since 2015.
Postdoctoral Fellow
Nicole Blin
Dr. Blin studied Civil Engineering at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, specializing in Hydraulic Engineering and Hydrogeology. Her research primarily focuses on the impacts of climate change on groundwater dynamics, basins of the Andean Altiplano, employing advanced groundwater modeling, innovative remote sensing techniques, and statistical processing of General Circulation Models (GCMs). Dr. Blin has made professional contributions through consulting hydrogeological projects with DICTUC in Chile. She is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
PhD Candidate
Yanina Müller
Yanina Müller specializes in karst hydrogeology. Her research focuses on transport processes of solutes and particles in karst aquifers, which she investigates by performing tracer tests and water quality monitoring at Germany’s second largest karst spring and in it’s attached cave system. The results provide insights into this karst system and contribute to a better understanding and management of karst springs overall.
Graduate Student
Daniel Corkran
Mr. Corkran has ten years of experience in environmental and geotechnical consulting. He specializes in hydrogeologic investigations, digital data collection, and groundwater flow modeling. His current research interests include variable-density flow modeling in brine-freshwater systems and groundwater responses to climate change.
Graduate Student
Rachel King
Ms. King is a master's student in the research group. She is studying the mechanisms of streamflow within ephemeral and intermittent streams in the high Andes. Her research interests include groundwater-surface water interactions, geophysics, and arid hydrology.
Graduate Student
Julianna Huba
Ms. Huba is a master’s student in the group. As an undergraduate at Lafayette College,
she studied stream morphology around Beaver Dam Analogues and gravity anomalies
in Pennsylvania. Her current research interests include groundwater-surface water
interactions, changes in water resources due to climate change, and geophysics.
Graduate Student
Tyler DeShong
Mr DeShong is a master’s student in the research group. As an undergraduate at Middlebury College, he studied passive margin uplift and drainage network evolution in the Adirondack Mountains. He has since worked in Vermont’s climate policy sector to increase energy resilience in municipal buildings. His research interests include groundwater flow and transport, fluvial geomorphology, and remote sensing.
Graduate Student
Aidan Wills
Mr. Wills is a master’s student in the research group as part of the one year professional masters program. As an undergraduate student at UMass he studied mechanical engineering and later switched to environmental science with a focus on hydrogeology and water resources. His research interests include PFAS contamination, understanding water budgets, and hydrologic mapping.
Graduate Student
Matthew Belden
Mr. Belden is an MS/PhD student in the research group. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Massachusetts in 2021. After working as an engineer for two years, he returned to UMass in a staff position in 2023 and performs that role while pursuing his graduate studies. His current research involves modeling groundwater flow in high mountain aquifers in the Gulf of Alaska.
Undergraduate Students
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Ms. Bresee is an undergraduate geology major in the lab group. With involvement in the Boutt Hydrology group and the Massachusetts DEP, she aims to concentrate her studies in hydrology and geochemistry.
Magdalen Bresee
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Ms. Kagunyi is a junior undergraduate double majoring in Environmental Science and Geology. She is also a part of the iCons program at UMass Amherst. Her main focus in the lab is to prep and run water samples on the Picarro Isotopic H2O Analyzer. She is also assisting with a study on groundwater recharge and climate change.
Crystal Kagunyi
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Mr. Gauthier is a senior Environmental Science major with a minor in Geology. He is currently assisting the lab group in its research of the high Andes, as well as investigating hydrogeologic factors affecting local drinking water supplies.
Drew Gauthier
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Ms. Sarnie is a junior undergraduate Earth Systems and Geology double major. She is assisting the Boutt Hydrology group and the Massachusetts DEP, and she aims to investigate hydrogeologic features through this research.
Mia Sarnie
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Mr. Olland is an undergraduate junior Environmental Science major and Geology minor. He currently analyzes groundwater data from USGS datasets using python in an effort to understand how the hydrologic cycle is impacted by climate change.
Gabriel Olland
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Ms. Hanlon is a junior undergrad majoring in Environmental Science with a minor in Biology and a certificate in GIST. She is currently assisting the lab group with the Collahausi project.
